Taking a road trip by car is the best way to see America and a wonderful way to learn more about our country. Before you pack your suitcases and head out the door, make sure that your vehicle is up to the task. If you have kept up with your regularly scheduled car service, you have taken the first step in keeping your vacation from becoming a nightmare looking for emergency car repairs in a strange town. Even small problems, such as worn-out windshield wipers or a flat tire can turn your trip into a crisis.

  1. Read your owner's manual. This is the best source of information about your car, from using overdrive when you tow a trailer to how to change a tire. Keep it in your glove box for easy reference.
  2. Signs of potential problems. If you notice any vibrations or irregular noise, such as knocking sounds, or if your car starts to “wander” to the side of the road while driving on a straight road, make a note for your mechanic to check it out.
  3. Pre-Trip Vehicle Maintenance. Most of the important components of your vehicle should only be inspected by an auto repair professional. Schedule a “pre-trip maintenance package,” with your auto shop. This package may include some or all of the following:
      • oil change
      • tires--rotation, alignment, balancing, air pressure (including the spare)
      • antifreeze (coolant) level in the overflow tank
      • check battery's cranking speed
      • check and top-off if needed, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer reservoir
      • change the air filter
      • check the jack
      • check the horn
      • check the windshield wipers
      • make sure all the lights are working
      • make sure the heater and air conditioner are in good working order
  4. Check the trunk. Stock a first aid kit and an emergency kit in the trunk, including roadside flares, a quart of oil, extra fuses, a flashlight, a multipurpose tool, a tire inflator and jack, some rags, and a pocket knife. Don’t forget your phone charger, bottled water, a blanket, and some protein snacks.
