The mornings are getting cooler and you may notice that your car isn’t starting very fast. With winter on its way, it may be time for car battery replacement. Is it safe to drive with a bad battery? Yes, but if it is weak, you might be left stranded somewhere out in the cold if the battery dies completely. A bad battery may also overload the alternator and adversely affect the operation of the vehicle’s electrical system.

Before we look at the signs of a bad battery, you may what to know what the battery does. The battery is an energy storage device that relies on a chemical reaction within the battery to produce electricity. This stored electrical energy is used to initially operate the starter motor, ignition system, and fuel system. Once the motor is running, the alternator supplies the electricity needed for all the other vehicle systems and re-charges the battery as you operate the car.

So what are the signs of a bad battery?

  • Your car doesn’t start. As battery ages, the cranking amps that a battery can supply becomes lower than its original rating. Once the cranking amps fall below a critical threshold, it will be difficult or impossible to start your car.
  • Battery warning light illuminates. Should the battery warning light illuminate, ask your mechanic if a car battery replacement is needed.
  • Electrical components don’t work. Once a battery has started to fail and the voltage produced by the battery drops, then the vehicle’s electrical components can malfunction.

Generally, a battery will have a service life of four to seven years. If a load test reveals a significant reduction in the capacity of the battery to provide power, it is time for a car battery replacement. Don’t wait for the old battery to fail completely.

Are you wondering about the reasons why your car battery keeps dying? Consult our ASE Certified Technicians at Auto Max of Oregon for more information about a car battery replacement and to schedule an appointment. Our auto shop proudly serves vehicle owners in Canby, OR and surrounding areas.
