Today's vehicles are designed with computer processors, microchips, and sensors that can be linked to a computer to scan the operating systems which will pinpoint exactly where a problem may exist. Your auto repair technician has been trained to “read” the codes generated during a car diagnostics test indicating whether or not it is time to tune up your car. This will save your mechanic a lot of time spent in troubleshooting a problem, plus it will save you money because you don't have to pay for repairs performed on a "trial-and-error" basis.

The engine tune-up includes both preventative and restorative engine assessment. It essentially consists of an inspection of the engine, an analysis of the vehicle’s performance, and then adjustments made to certain items as needed. What is included in the tune up car inspection will vary from vehicle to vehicle, based on the age of the vehicle, the mileage is driven, and the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations.

What does a full car tune up include? Here is a basic tune up car service checklist:

1. Check the spark plugs. An engine in good condition should have spark plugs with light tan or gray insulator firing noses. Any other color could be the sign of an engine problem. What color is the spark and is it properly igniting the fuel? Make sure the spark plug wires are not hard or cracked.
2. Check the fuel filter to make sure it isn’t clogged or dirty.
3. Check the fuel pump for proper function.
4. Inspect the fuel injectors to make sure dirt or other deposits are not restricting the amount of fuel that can be delivered to the engine, affecting how the spark plugs fire.
5. Adjust the timing and idle if necessary.
6. Check the PCV valve to make sure it isn’t clogged or leaking.
7. Inspect the vehicle’s points and condenser.

A word to the wise: A car diagnostic test may reveal other problems associated with your vehicle's operating systems and performance level. It is worth the extra cost!
