So you have decided to go with a diesel car. But how do you take care of it? In many ways, a diesel engine is less complicated than a petrol engine, with greater reliability and a longer working life. Regular maintenance is absolutely imperative if you want a diesel engine to last.

Although diesel engines require no ignition tune-ups and tend to last longer without major repairs than gasoline engines, they do require regular low-cost maintenance, mostly in the form of frequent oil and filter changes. The urea injection systems that reduce nitrogen oxide emissions also need refilling, which is usually done as part of regularly scheduled maintenance. Don’t try to clean or adjust a diesel’s fuel injectors yourself.

So what does a full service include on a diesel car:

  • Changing the lubricating oil
  • Changing the air filter
  • Changing the fuel filter
  • Bleeding the fuel system
  • Draining the water separators

When it comes to most diesel vehicles, the recommended service period is every 3,000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. However, this service interval can differ quite significantly depending on the make and model of your car, as well as how much you drive on a regular basis. If you maintain your vehicle according to the schedule in your owner’s manual, they can last 100,000 miles or more.
